Go For Launch!, Print production
Brief
Higher Orbits is an American non-profit. It uses space exploration to teach teamwork, communication and leadership through STEM. Its Go For Launch! programme runs three days, with a retired NASA astronaut in the room. The brochure presented one edition of it, at St. Edward’s University in Austin, in July 2017. It had to address two audiences. With a high school student it had to attract and hold attention; for a parent or a teacher it had to give concrete information about the content of the programme, the dates and the organiser. Four pages for all of it.
Approach
The cover works like a poster. The title runs across the top, the event patch sits dead centre, dates and audience go under it, and the curve of the Earth with a shuttle crosses the bottom edge. A green aurora ties the cover and the back panel into one picture. Inside, the tone changes. The two inner pages open on a white column with dark strips holding the outer edges, so the night sky stays on the covers. The left page is the team, four circular portraits ringed in the programme colours. The right page is the questions a reader is already asking, each with its answer under it. The back panel carries the partners and the contact details. Typeset in InDesign, images prepared in Photoshop, delivered print-ready.
Result
A four-page piece that holds up to both kinds of reading. At a glance, as it is passed around at school, the cover carries what the programme is. Read at length at home, the inside answers what the three days involve, how they are scheduled and who runs them.
